PACS NEWS 2005

ANNUAL BACK TO SCHOOL EVENT

On September , 2005, over 30 kids received backpacks and/or school supplies due to the generosity of the Raytheon Asian Pacific Association(RAPA).  The staff prepared a little party at the Long Beach site with refreshments and games.  The smiles and laughter shared that afternoon were good reminders of what WRAP is all about.  As each child’s name was called out, he/she could choose to come up, receive a gift and share one goal for the coming school year.  For some, it was to stay out of probation, for others it was to stay away from drugs.  Some were too shy to come up, others couldn’t stop talking.  Everyone got a round of applause.

Through the efforts of the Torrance Jaycees who fundraise throughout the year, each of the eligible children received $100 in shopping dollars to shop for school clothes at Mervyn’s.  In addition, Mervyn's also provided a 20% discount and did not charge for sales tax to stretch those funds.  With the assistance of staff members, Sovuth, Sopha, Vichettra, Steve and Stephanie and the volunteer efforts of Nicole Yamada, 15 kids went shopping on August 6th.

Our Adopt-A-Family campaign has two wonderful supporting organizations that make it possible for us to provide a positive back-to-school experience for our kids.

WRAP would also like to thank all of the year end donors who contributed to the Adopt-A-Family campaign to keep this program alive.

June 2, 2005 Board Installation

With the generous sponsorship of Southern California Edison, WRAP Family Services held a lovely reception to acknowledge Mariko Kahn, the new Executive Director and to install the newly elected Board of Directors.  Held at the well-known Empress Restaurant, there were delicious hors d’oeuvres and lively conversations amongst the many attendees.  Dr. Ben Wong installed the Board and its officers accompanied with a lively speech.  John Hatakeyama, Deputy Chief from the Department of Mental Health did a humorous introduction of Mariko.  Nave Mao and Theartithan Bun shared how the Youths Excelling for Success (YES) Program made a difference for them.  We thank all of you who came to show your support.  Congratulations to Board President, Shaighn Kim and her hard working board members!

April 24, 2005 First Annual Cambodian New Year’s Parade

Led by CSS staff members, Steve Meng and Vichettra He, many of our WRAP staff, community participants and children in our after school programs took part in the First Annual Cambodian New Year’s Parade.  Although the event got off to a rocky start due to conflicts within the Cambodian community about the date of the parade, it turned out to be a well-attended event. WRAP was proud to show its solidarity with the growing Cambodian population in Long Beach. The beautiful floats, gorgeously colored costumes and lovely people turned the grey, rainy day into sunshine. Hundreds of people lined the streets and we loved their enthusiastic applause. We plan to be there next year!
